I highly recommend parents getting the Summer Skills activity books to review and maintain skills during the summer. I have used both the math and reading for 4th grade and find them effective.
We read a story this year, "Amazing Alice", about Alice Ramsey and her companions. They traveled across country in a car. On Aug. 7, 1909 she became the first woman to drive across the US. The trip will be replicated this summer beginning in NY on June 9. The car and driver should be in Cedar Rapids around June 18. Watch the paper for more information.
Fr. Rod discussed his interesting journey to the priesthood.
Plan a visit to Hoover Museum this summer. There is so much to see we aren't able to do it all in one field trip.
Keep reading, visualizing, discussing this summer. There are many reading programs being offered.
Review all math skills, study all basic facts for accuracy and speed.
On Monday all students will bring home:
3 ring binders – I think you will be impressed with the quality and variety of written work they completed this year
Folders with rubrics and other aids they used this year to meet grade level expectations – I would keep these as a reference
Tuesday:
Notebooks – writer’s resource has many references they might want to keep to keep building on writing skills and for writing ideas in 5th grade
Wednesday:
Students will bring home:
Progress reports
CD full of pictures from 4th grade year – thank you Mr. Brown for doing this for us, the students picked out the song
2 copies of the blockout gameboard and directions which you can laminate or make more copies of – great for practicing all facts and strategy
AR record for the year
AR reading list for levels 4.7 – 5.2
As you travel around Iowa this summer keep in mind Iowa History is a big part of 5th grade Social Studies. Take pictures, buy postcards, visit the state capitol, HooverMuseum, Living History Farms, various sites in Dubuque, study Iowa maps, notice there are 99 counties. What are the major cities, landforms, rivers, crops, natural resources? Any topic they covered for their state report would be good to research for Iowa. Share your stories about growing up in Iowa, moving to Iowa, traveling in Iowa, etc.,
